Last Mile Semiconductor GmbH, a Dresden-based deep-tech startup, is developing the next generation of energy-efficient wireless connectivity solutions based on the new DECT NR+ standard. As a pioneer in the field of ultra-low-power RFICs and SoCs, we are shaping the future of IoT, Industry 4.0, and Massive Machine-Type Communication (mMTC). Our chips are based on state-of-the-art CMOS and FD-SOI technologies and are used worldwide for scalable, robust, and cost-effective applications.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Development, implementation, and optimization of embedded software and firmware for our DECT NR+ microchip
  • Specifying, designing, and further developing software architectures in C/C++ for resource-constrained, hardware-proximate systems
  • Development of drivers, applications, and system components for microcontrollers and real-time operating systems such as FreeRTOS, Mbed OS, or Zephyr
  • Implementation and integration of microcontroller peripherals and serial interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, timers, ADC, and DAC
  • Development and evaluation of solutions for multi-core communication, synchronization, and interrupt handling
  • Close collaboration with hardware and systems engineers in the development and integration of holistic solutions
  • Creation of test requirements and test cases, as well as conducting tests, debugging, and performance analyses
  • Systematic analysis and resolution of technical issues throughout the entire development cycle
  • Documentation and maintenance of the software architecture, as well as continuous improvement of existing systems
  • Active involvement from conception through integration and validation to market launch and implementation of customer-specific software solutions

Technical Environment:

  • Embedded software, firmware, and hardware-oriented C/C++ development
  • DECT NR+ and energy-efficient wireless connectivity solutions
  • Real-time operating systems, in particular FreeRTOS, Mbed OS, and Zephyr
  • Microcontroller peripherals, interrupts, timers, ADC/DAC, and multi-core communication
  • Serial bus systems and interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, and RS485
  • Secure boot, fail-safe bootloaders, and embedded security as potential development focuses
  • Git, GitLab/GitHub, JIRA, and CI/CD-based development processes
  • CMOS and FD-SOI technologies, including 22FDX
  • Interfaces between ASIC, firmware, PCB, and system software

Your Profile:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a comparable field
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in the development of embedded software or firmware
  • Solid and demonstrable programming skills in C/C++ with a technical understanding equivalent to senior level
  • Experience in the specification, architecture, and design of hardware-close software for microcontrollers
  • Solid understanding of program execution, memory layout, the stack, registers, interrupts, compilers, linkers, and linker scripts
  • Practical experience with real-time operating systems and the fundamentals of tasks, scheduling, and context and task switches
  • Good knowledge of low-level interfaces such as SPI, I2C, or UART, as well as microcontroller peripherals and multi-core communication
  • Experience with at least one modern communication standard such as Bluetooth, LTE, or Wi-Fi, as well as a clear understanding of the technical interrelationships
  • Proficiency with Git, GitLab/GitHub, JIRA, and CI/CD; knowledge of Python is a plus
  • Self-motivation, methodical problem-solving, clear communication, and enthusiasm for embedded technologies and working in a deep-tech startup

Nice-to-Have:

    • Experience with FreeRTOS, Mbed OS, or Zephyr; particularly with porting or deeper integration of an RTOS
    • Proficiency with CAN, RS485, (Q)SPI, or other bus systems
    • Experience with Secure Boot, fail-safe bootloaders, or securing embedded devices
    • Knowledge of Zephyr configuration, the device tree, and relevant Zephyr macros
    • Experience with RISC-V, functional verification, instruction sets, or debug modules
    • Understanding of the PHY and MAC layers of modern wireless standards
    • Knowledge of OFDM, FFT, modulation, ENOB, image rejection, or random-access methods

We offer:
