The Neurophysiology research group investigates the neural basis of hearing and communication in mice and other small mammals (e.g., naked mole-rats). Using electrophysiological, behavioural, and anatomical/molecular biological techniques, we study the function of brain structures involved in the processing of complex acoustic signals. A further focus is on acoustic communication in these animals across different behavioural contexts. We are particularly interested in changes in brain function and behaviour in mice with Fragile X syndrome, a form of autism spectrum disorder. These animals, similar to affected humans, exhibit increased auditory sensitivity as well as impairments in acoustic communication. In addition, the research group is involved in the coordination and teaching of courses in animal physiology (BSc) and neurobiology (MSc). A particular priority is the support and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds.

Job description:

  • Participation in research and teaching in the field of neurobiology and animal physiology.
  • The central task is the investigation of the neural basis of hearing and communication in mice and other small model organisms.
  • Supervision within the research group, as well as acquisition of third-party funding and active participation in teaching activities.
  • Teaching activities include introductory courses in animal physiology as well as advanced courses in neurobiology.
  • The position serves the purpose of the candidate’s own academic qualification (habilitation).

Requirements:
  • Completed academic university degree (Master’s, Diploma, or equivalent) in Biology or a related field.
  • Completed PhD in Biology (e.g., in Neuroscience) or a related discipline.

Desirable:
  • Experience in animal experimental research in the field of neurobiology
  • Methodological expertise in modern neurophysiological, behavioral, and/or anatomical/molecular biological techniques
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including scientific programming (R, Python, Matlab)
  • Interest in integrative research approaches that combine findings from human and animal models
  • Publication record in international peer-reviewed journals
